Arignar Anna Government Arts College (AAGAC) Cheyyar, was established in 1967 with the lofty vision of offering higher education to the rural youth of Cheyyar and the neighbouring villages of Thiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu. The institution owes its existence to the dedicated efforts of the former North Arcot District Collector, Mr. P.M. Belliappa, I.A.S., Mr. P. Ramachandran, the former MLA of Cheyyar and Mr. Pulavar Govindan, the then Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Situated on a 66-hectare campus, the college is located in the Arcot road, about two kilometres from the town of Cheyyar. The college caters to the diverse educational needs of less privileged socio-economically backward communities in the Thiruvannamalai District. It is a Grade-I Government Arts College recognized under sections 2(f) and 12(b) by the UGC, receiving grants accordingly. Initially affiliated to Madras University, later it became affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University in 2002 and remains so to this day
