Arignar Anna Government Arts College (AAGAC) Cheyyar, was established in 1967 with the lofty vision of offering higher education to the rural youth of Cheyyar and the neighbouring villages of Thiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu. The institution owes its existence to the dedicated efforts of the former North Arcot District Collector, Mr. P.M. Belliappa, I.A.S., Mr. P. Ramachandran, the former MLA of Cheyyar and Mr. Pulavar Govindan, the then Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Situated on a 66-hectare campus, the college is located in the Arcot road, about two kilometres from the town of Cheyyar. The college caters to the diverse educational needs of less privileged socio-economically backward communities in the Thiruvannamalai District. It is a Grade-I Government Arts College recognized under sections 2(f) and 12(b) by the UGC, receiving grants accordingly. Initially affiliated to Madras University, later it became affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University in 2002 and remains so to this day.

When the institution was established, a batch of 80 students were admitted in three disciplines: Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Today, the institution prides itself of running 15 undergraduate, 12 postgraduate and 10 research departments. From its modest beginnings, AAGAC Cheyyar has evolved to become the foremost Government Arts and Science college in this region, boasting a student population of nearly 8,000. This growth is a clear testament to the college's commitment to the cause of academic excellence and its significant role in transforming the educational landscape of the region.

As a Government College, the institution adheres to the reservation policy of the Government of Tamil Nadu, admitting over 90% of students from socially and economically under-privileged sections of society. The current cycle marks the fourth cycle of NAAC accreditation for the institution, with the previous cycle in 2019 resulting in a B grade. This consistent pursuit of accreditation underscores the institution's unwavering commitment to maintaining and enhancing its academic standards towards the pursuit of academic excellence.

VISION

The institution was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu on July 17, 1967, in the Thiruvannamalai district with the aim of promoting the educational prospects of rural children. The primary vision of this institution, as articulated by its founders, Pulavar Govindan and Arignar Anna, emphasised the pivotal role of education in fuelling the societal progress. They ardently believed that education is the powerful means to uplift the masses and elevate individuals to esteemed positions and improve their socio-economic status.

Moreover, the founders of the institution believed that education not only offers better job opportunities for the youth but also enhances their economic well-being and improved quality of life. Education for rural youth is not just a gateway to knowledge, but a beacon of empowerment, offering them the right tools and templates to transform their communities and chart their own destinies amidst the challenges of rural life. At Arignar Anna Government Arts College, the vision is the holistic development of all students, nurturing their intellectual, emotional, social and moral well-being. From inception till date, efforts are being made to translate this vision into reality. This vision is now being fulfilled, as envisioned by its founders, by imparting education to the marginalised and economically weaker sections of the society in this region of Tamil Nadu.

The mission of AAGAC, Cheyyar is to empower the rural youth of Thiruvannamalai district through quality higher education. The institution is dedicated to providing equal opportunities for intellectual and personal growth to both boys and girls from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
